House Update: Hiccup

Tuesday, July 1, 2014
Well we finally hit a little hiccup and I must say we have been extremely lucky thus far so this was almost sort of expected in a way. (whew long sentence) I guess I shouldn't say finally because we did run into that water damage in the floor of the kitchen but literally we've been sort of breezing through the first floor. That all changed last night...we were about to start the master bath and lay down the backer board so we could put in the tile when Seth's hammer went through the wall...like really easily through the wall... hmmm so he started knocking around the shower where it happened and the walls were sort of hollow/weak sounding. We ended up taking down the drywall and finding 1.) complete wood rot we're guessing from water and 2.) the biggest ant colony you've ever seen (I mean enough to make your skin crawl UGH not carpenter ants though so I doubt they did the majority of the damage)

base of shower

disgusting wood rot in the walls... like all the walls around the shower

We started ripping out the entire base around the shower, even the cavity you see above the shower is gone and the ceiling over there as well. Directly above that area is the shower upstairs so we thought maybe a leak was coming from there and once we moved up there we did indeed find a little one. Luckily it was an easy fix with some plumbing parts and a couple hardware trips but walls did come down up there as well. Hubby put it nicely though when he said "Well, at least it has forced us to get things started up here in this bathroom sooner" (haha love him)

The bathroom upstairs is rather large and weird shaped so let me start off by showing some photos- it's almost like two bathrooms so we are going to wall off one half and have it lead to the guest room and keep the larger half and just add a toilet for the future children bathroom.

That so-called closet looking door behind him actually leads to other half of bathroom!

We are going to flip the vanity to the back wall and make it a double

That linen closer he has now gutted to add plumbing for another toilet

This is beyond those closet doors

We'll add a door to the left of that toilet leading into the guest room

Needless to say it was not what we expected to find but a house this old is bound to have some obstacles it wants to throw your way!  Just a set back in time mostly since we could have been done with the master bath tile by now but I will keep ya'll posted on the progress! On a lighter note, the entry way/hall way ceiling is completely scraped of its popcorn and painted! We are ready to paint the walls in there and be totally finished (well- we still need to pick a light fixture!) Also, honey is moving right along on the porch getting it ready for new paint!

Only this much more to go babe...

Don't forget to link up with Amanda as I co-host Wino Wednesday with her tomorrow and share with us your current or all-time favorite vino!
"Join me for a virtual wine tasting the first Wednesday of every month.  There's no need to be a wine connoisseur, it's easy, pick a favorite wine and write what you liked about it,  what you paired it with (dinner, chocolate, cheese, by itself), and attach what the winemaker's description of the wine."
